Steering Rack End Removal and Installation

NOTE:
Do not allow dust, dirt, or other foreign materials to enter the steering gearbox.
Refer to Steering Gearbox Disassembly and Reassembly as needed during this procedure.

3. Rack End Boot - Remove


1.
Remove the boot band (A).

2.
Remove the tie-rod clip (B).

3.
Pull the boot (C) away from the ends of the steering gearbox.

4. Rack End - Remove

1.
Hold the gearbox housing using a C-clamp (A) and wooden blocks (B) to a workbench as shown.

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the mounting surface with a C-clamp.
Do not clamp the cylinder part of the gearbox housing with a C-clamp.

Unscrew the rack end (A) with a wrench.

NOTE:
Hold the flat surfaces (B) with a wrench when unscrewing both rack ends.
Be careful not to damage the rack surface.

3.
Remove the rack end and the rubber stopper (C).


NOTE:

1. Rack End - Install

1.
Hold the gearbox housing using a C-clamp (A) and wooden blocks (B) to a workbench as shown.

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the mounting surface with a C-clamp.
Do not clamp the cylinder part of the gearbox housing with a C-clamp.






2.
Install a new rubber stopper (A).

3.
Tighten the rack end (B) with a wrench.

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the rack surface.
Hold the flat surfaces (C) with a wrench when tightening both rack ends.

2. Rack End Boot - Install


1.
Apply multipurpose grease to the rack end joint housing (A) and the boot installation grooves (B).

2.
Install the boot (C) on the rack end with the tie-rod clip (D) and a new boot band (E).

NOTE:
Fit the boot end in the installation grooves in the housing properly.
After installing the boots, wipe the grease off the threaded section (F) of the rack end.





3.
Set the boot band (A) by aligning the tabs (B) with the holes (C) on the band.






4.
Close the ear portion (A) of the boot band with pincers Oetiker 1098, commercially available or equivalent (B).

5.
Slide the rack right and left to be certain that the boots are not deformed or twisted.
