Apply new engine oil to the bolt threads.

4. Front Balancer Shaft and Rear Balancer Shaft - Install

Align the punch mark (A) on the rear balancer shaft (B) in the center of the two punch marks (C) on the front balancer shaft (D), then install the balancer shafts on the lower balancer shaft holder (E).

5. Upper Balancer Shaft Holder - Install


6. Baffle Plate - Install


7. Relief Valve - Install

NOTE: Valve must slide freely in housing bore. Replace the oil pump as assembly if scored.

Balancer Shaft

1. Oil Pump Balancer Shaft End Play - Inspect

Zero the dial indicator against the end of the front balancer shaft, then push the front balancer shaft back and forth and read the end play.

Balancer Shaft End Play
Standard (New):
0.070?0.120 mm (0.00276?0.00472 in)
Service Limit:
0.135 mm (0.00531 in)

2. Oil Pump Housing - Remove


3. Baffle Plate - Remove


4. Upper Balancer Shaft Holder - Remove


5. Front Balancer Shaft and Rear Balancer Shaft - Remove


6. Balancer Shaft Bearing Half - Remove


7. Oil Pump Balancer Shaft - Inspect

Clean both balancer shaft No. 1 and No. 2 journals and the bearing halves with a clean shop towel, then place both balancer shafts into the balancer shaft holder.

Place one strip of plastigage across each No. 1 and No. 2 journal.

Reinstall the bearings and the upper balancer shaft holder, then tighten the bolts.

NOTE: Do not rotate the balancer shafts during inspection.

Remove the upper balancer shaft holder and the bearings again, and measure the widest part with the plastigage. If the balancer shaft No. 1 and No. 2 journals oil clearance is out-of-tolerance, install new bearings, and recheck. If it is still out-of-tolerance, replace the balancer shafts.

Standard (New):
0.050?0.082 mm (0.00197?0.00323 in)
Service Limit:
0.100 mm (0.00394 in)
No. 2 Journal Oil Clearance:
Standard (New):
0.060?0.120 mm (0.00236?0.00472 in)
Service Limit:
0.150 mm (0.00591 in)

8. All Removed Parts - Install

Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.
